The Brief History Of St. Jude Parish - Bura Tana
In 1974, Bura – Tana Irrigation and Settlement scheme was started. Tenants from 28 ethnic groups live in 10 villages which were turned into the outstations of the parish. The local pastoralists of Orma tribe live in 19 residential settlements. St. Jude’s Thaddeus Parish in Bura – Tana knows it’s beginnings since 1983, under the leadership of catechist Paul Merthiani and Sylvester Wanyoike. The first Catholics in Bura used to hold their religious gatherings under a big tree at “Bura Baraza Park”. The late Fr. Thaddues Schembri OFM Cap, from Malta, began the construction of the Priests and Sisters house; at the same time the Parish church was under construction. This was completed in May 1983 and was opened and blessed by the late Cardinal Maurice Otunga, Archbishopof Nairobi. From 1983, the church was run by the Mill Hill congregation, both fathers and sisters. Thereafter shortly the Holy Ghost fathers took over upto 2007, where they left to take over newly created Parish of Wenje.
Since 2007 upto date, The current Church building shown in this website was as a result of the efforts of the Guatemalan Missionaries (Missionary Fraternity of Mary).
